Tiger on the tee at the 2007
Wachovia Championship
Tiger Woods
returns to the links this weekend as the PGA Tour tees off
at Quail Hollow in Charlotte, North
Carolina for the Wachovia Championship. Tiger hasn't played since finishing second at The
Masters almost a month ago, so he should be well rested and ready to compete.
Woods will be looking for
his first career win at Quail
Hollow in his third try at the Wachovia. Woods' best finish in this tournament
came back in 2004 when he tied for third, while he tied for 11th
place a year later in 2005.
Woods decided to skip this
tournament last season when Jim Furyk
finished at 12-under par and won the tourney by defeating Trevor Immelman in a
playoff. That was the third straight year that the Wachovia had been decided in
extra holes. It was also the second straight year that Furyk was involved in the
final playoff. The previous year Furyk faced Vijay Singh and
Sergio Garcia in
a three-way battle, which Singh went on to win.
In 2004 Joey Sindelar
went to a playoff with Arron Oberholser and came away with the tournament
victory. The first year the Wachovia was played in 2003 was the only year the
tournament was not decided in a playoff. David Toms won the inaugural tournament
that year with a 10-under par score.
Alongside Woods, Furyk and
Singh, the rest of the PGA's biggest names will be in North Carolina this
weekend. Some of these big names will include Luke Donald, Ernie Els, Retief
Goosen, Masters champ Zach Johnson, Phil Mickelson and Adam Scott.
Another name to keep your
eye on this weekend is Scott Verplank. The veteran Verplank is coming off a big
win in last weekend's EDS Byron Nelson Championship after edging Luke Donald by
a single stroke. Verplank was a rock on the final three holes of the Byron
Nelson, and he'll need the same sure hand on the back end of the Wachovia. The
final three holes at Quail Hollow rank up there with some of the toughest holes
on the PGA Tour, which makes mounting a late comeback difficult to pull off, and
makes a playoff must-see TV.
