Wie's Shot At History

By Mike “Boozer”
WagerWeb Contributing Writer

Wie's shot at history starts Thursday, when she tees it up at this week's John Deere Classic for her fifth attempt at becoming the first woman since Babe Zaharias in 1945 to make the cut on the PGA Tour.

I've been making odds for Wie since her first PGA Tour event, the 2004 Sony Open. It was remarkable that at the ripe old age of 14, she came within a single shot of the 36 hole cut. Even more amazing was the interest she generated at the betting window. Every time Wie tees it up with the "Big Boys" the betting public takes notice. And as part of the betting public I'm betting that for the first time since 1945 a woman will be playing weekend golf on the PGA Tour.

There are many reasons why Michelle Wie, the face of women's golf, is the best bet at this week's John Deere Classic. By far, the most heavily bet wager option is whether Wie will make the 36 hole cut. The biggest reason to bet YES and take +225 is due to a weak field. With most of the game's top guns already in Britain, American Chris DiMarco, the world number 22, is the highest-ranked player in the field. So, bet YES!

Secondly, unlike her four previous PGA Tour attempts, Wie has been playing regularly and gaining confidence with solid performances on the LPGA. She has finished a combined five shots out of the lead in three LPGA majors this year, lipping out a 10-foot birdie putt on the final hole at the Kraft Nabisco Championship to miss out on a playoff. And the last time Wie played against the men, she made the cut on the Asian Tour, finishing 12 shots out of the lead in the SK Telecom Open. So, bet YES!

Lastly, the TPC at Deere Run is a course that suits her game. The Honolulu schoolgirl who regularly powers her drives over 300 yards enables her to take advantage of short and fairway friendly course. Wie's length is a good fit at Deere Run and she'll have plenty of looks at birdie on Thursday and Friday. So, bet YES!

If you still don't think betting YES at +225 cashes a ticket, here's what the men think. Defending champion Sean O'Hair predicted she will make the cut after Tuesday's practice round with Wie, Zach Johnson, and Jason Day. Johnson said Wie is hitting the ball farther than last year. And the rest of her game is fine, too."She's going to have a bunch of opportunities, and she's just a phenomenal talent," Johnson said. "She's good."

I agree with Zach. She is good and will make history at this week's John Deere Classic. So, bet YES!
